Turning into Winter
(Mitchell)

When the birds on the wire tell you summer is over
And nights by the fireside are waiting ahead
Will you then think of days of soft ice cream and lemonade
To drive all the memories of cold from your head

Now you can see past the trees from your window
The leaves have returned to the earth whence they came
Darkness encircles the day as it wakes up
Will you ever see the sun shining again

Ice cream and lemonade, sandals and swimming
The memories of summer will have to be strong
For winter soon drives away thoughts of things that you do
From where we are sitting, the winter seems long

Those cool summer dresses remind you of magic
Days before winter brought colours of grey
They're folded and told to be patient
Along with their mistress, to be rediscovered one day

Does that warm woollen clothing protect you from winter
Or does Jack Frost cunningly find a way through
To chill you and thrill you with thoughts of far places
Where snow ploughs and sleigh bells have no work to do

When the first breaths of springtime emerge from their slumbers
To bring needed light to the summer ahead
You can then think of days of soft ice cream and lemonade
To drive all the memories of cold from your head
